The Story

Understanding this legend of love across the human-fox divide makes the performance more immersive.

The Beginning · A Flower-Drum Opera

Adapted from a Hunan folk legend

'Tianmen Fox Fairy · New Liu Hai Chops Wood' is adapted from the traditional flower-drum opera 'Liu Hai Chops Wood,' which is widely known across Hunan. The play tells of the simple yet moving bond between Liu Hai the woodcutter and the fox fairy, a household story in the folk culture of western Hunan. Building on this, Tianmen Fox Fairy carried out a completely new artistic reconstruction, moving a small folk play into the vast landscape of the Tianmen Mountain Grand Canyon and turning it into a mountain-and-water live-action musical.
